How to create a work breakdown structure in 6 steps
A good work breakdown structure is created using an iterative process by following steps and guidelines. Here’s the step-by-step approach I use when I’m building a work breakdown structure from scratch.
Step 1: Write a scope statement
Before you open a tool or start listing tasks, stop and ask: Why are we doing this? What’s the end result meant to achieve? This is where you write a scope statement.

So before anything else, I get the right people on a short call — just 15–20 minutes — and I ask three things:

- What would make you say, “This project was a success”?
